So, a question I always get asked by the young people is: What do I chase?
- Do I chase money?
- Do I chase a job?
- Do I chase education?
Well, sure, money is something you need. You’ve got to make money. I think for young people, in particular, there may be a focus on money just so they can pay the bills and get by.
But I always say, especially to young folks: chase your passion. Chase something you believe in… something you love.
And when you really zero in on that passion… the money will follow. It always does.
What you’ve got to do is find and lean into the sacred intersection of where your skills and passion align and overlap — that’s the sweet spot.
First, focus on your passion. What do you love doing on a daily basis?
Second, figure out your skill set. What are you actually good at doing?
Then when you combine the two — a love of something and a skill set of something — life gets a lot easier… daily things get a lot easier… work gets a lot easier. Progressing forward gets a lot easier.
But, you need to drill down even more into your passion and skill set…
You’ve got to focus on what really matters each day that’s congruent with your skill set and passion.
Think of it like this — your primary mission is figuring out what really matters that day.
Things that don’t matter:
- checking email all the time
- rabbit holing on Facebook, even if you’re looking at REI groups
- listening to latest REI guru’s podcast and getting distracted
- YouTube-ing videos all day, even if they’re educational
Things that do matter:
- making offers
- following up on old and dead leads
- any revenue-producing activity
- returning seller calls
- proactively look for deals through deal channels
Do the things that really matter in terms of moving you forward and hitting your goals… that keep you going on all your strides.
And be honest with yourself. There are some things that you’re going to do today that absolutely do not matter. And on top of that, they might even move you backwards.
So here’s your goal: The goal is to identify things that matter… that accelerate and move you forward — do more of those and get rid of things that don’t matter at all.
Here’s a solid path to help get you there, too…
Create habits.
See, your future comes directly from your habits. Your family does not determine your future, your boss does not determine your future, all the circumstances that take place around you also don’t determine your future.
Your future is determined by the daily habits that you keep.
So, quit focusing on all the outside circumstances that take place around you… and start focusing on creating successful daily habits. Build habits into your day.
The more potent your daily habits, the quicker you are to achieving goals and reaching success.
Ok, back to chasing passion. Is there a litmus test to know whether you’ve really zeroed in on your passion?
Yes, there is.
Check this out — my wife and I just got back from a long vacation with our friends. We spent time on an amazing yacht in Miami. We drove awesome cars, had a private chef. It was an incredible vacation.
But I can honestly say that the very last day of the vacation, I was just as fired up as ever to go back home. Because I was excited to get back to work. Because for me, it’s not work. It’s my passion.
When you’re on your last day of vacation, and you’re cranky because you’re about to go back to what you’re doing, the daily grind, a J.O.B. — that’s your answer. That is clearly not your passion.
So… figure out what your true passion really is, combine that with your best skills, do things that matter and make them daily habits — you’ll be good to go.
That’s the right way to chase your passion.
